Spaces
Large, airy spaces are often hard to come by nowadays in NYC. What used to be rows and streets of warehouses and old factories on the edge of Brooklyn have now been mostly torn down and built into fancy, luxurious condo’s that most of us can’t afford. Or, they’re bought out by millennial media companies to use as their new office space.
I stumbled upon this space, A/D/O, awhile back. It’s tucked away in Greenpoint, on the border near Williamsburg, where there’s still a lot of industrial spaces around but also still slowly disappearing (R.I.P the old Brooklyn Bazaar). That isn’t to say A/D/O isn’t a part of this mass wave of gentrification.

A/D/O is a large, airy, space for “creative exchange.” The main space is open to the public and features a wide open workspace for people to meet/collaborate/work independently. There is also a restaurant/bar. They also house a small curated boutique and showcase different types of artworks as well. I was first drawn to this space because of its beautiful, well-designed & decorated interior space, open layout, and accessibility. Anyone can just meet or work here, and there are public restrooms and free pitchers of water. People can just walk in and out as they please, and have the ability to sit or stroll around their back courtyard. Unlike most NYC spaces, A/D/O features an “underutilized” space, meaning, that instead of trying to maximize the amount of tables they can fit into the space (thus allowing more people to work/meet), A/D/O feels comfortable and spacious. Anyone who has every tried to work at a coffeeshop or a free co-working space knows how cramped and noisy it can get, especially if you are trying to work with other people.
